Coaching Styles

It is vitally important coaches use different coaching styles throughout their sessions to ensure they are catering for all participants involved within a coaching practice.

From my own experience there are three main types of Coaching Styles I use these being:
  • Democratic, Autocratic & Laissez - Faire

The autocratic style is simply where all the decisions are made by the coach, without consultation of his players. The coach will want to be in control of the whole session.

The Democratic style allows players to have shared decision making throughout the session with the coach. The coach will look to guide the players towards selecting and achieving their goals.  The coach will generally make the final decision but shall include players within the decision making process.

Laissez - Faire allows players to have further input throughout the session allowing them to express their own ideas, and make their own decisions on the pitch. There shall be very limited input from the coach.

Coaches should be looking to use a variety of different coaching styles as all players react in different ways. Some players may be motivated by one approach whereas others may not, this is why it is important for a coach to be flexible in their approach and change styles where necessary dependent on the situation and the needs of the players.
